If our discovery of the Sultanate of Oman was fast because in the framework of a project initiated by the Franco Omanaise association and the Omani tourism ministry, we were captivated by the beauty and the potential of the destination during our road trip. trip. OUR TRIP: 6 days on site: early November 2018
OR ? in the Middle East, next to Dubai & Abu Dhabi
SURFACE: about 310 000 km 2 is almost half as big as France (544 000 km) | 80% of desert | 17% mountains | 3000 km of almost virgin coastline.
WHEN TO GO? the country is extensive and there are micro climates on some destinations in the country.
November-April: it's high season, the assurance of having the sun in winter, with less hot temperatures (average 25 ° C but much cooler in the mountains or the desert at night) Attention prices are twice as high for hotels especially
June-July-August: to avoid, it is up to 50 ° C on the north coast of the country, the furnace! The Omani flee in the south (Dhorfar) for the monsoon period coming from the Indian Ocean, the rain makes the climate more sustainable.
A tip: go there in mid-September: For those not afraid of heat, it is still hot but around 35/40 on the coast, in the mountains it is a small 30 ° C very nice for us Europeans and the prices are half as much as in November !! It can be worth it !!
HOW LONG TIME DO YOU GO? in 1 week well organized, we can already see beautiful things (we recommend at least 8) / 10-12j even better to integrate the southern part of Salalah with an internal flight of 1 hour to stay 2/3 nights.
HOW TO GET THERE ? With Oman Air in direct flight from Paris (from 400 € A / R) and internal flight to Salalah, seaside resort to the south.
TRAVEL AGENCY: If you want to organize your trip to Oman, one of the largest agencies is Khimji's House of Travel , they helped us in particular in renting 4 × 4. We also met on the spot Martine, a French very nice, expatriated in Oman since 7 years . Having been a travel guide all her life, she fell in love with Oman and decided to set up her receptive agency with an Omani friend, Nabob. Together, they offer tailor-made activities ranging from wild camping to 5 to discover the beauties of the country.

TIME DIFFERENCE: + 2h in summer time, + 3h in winter time
BUDGET: Oman still has relatively few infrastructures and tourist establishments, for example you will not find public buses or nice hostels. It is a trip that has a certain cost especially because of the indispensability of renting a car or a 4 × 4 and the lack of choice of accommodation. However, there are alternatives to lowering the rating. Leaving slightly out of season, prices fall by half (see "When to go" above). In backpack mode, you should know that you can do couchsurfing (not tested personally but we had testimonials from travelers for whom it had gone very well!) Olivia of the blog Le Ptit Reporter). Finally bivouac / wild camping is allowed throughout the country for free (provided you respect the local population as everywhere and do not leave behind waste). So we can very well imagine leaving 2/3 pals in a 4X4 with a tent and equipment in the trunk. The camping equipment can also be rented on site if you do not want to bring everything ... (Martine offers for example, see above travel agency). Otherwise yes the hotels (all ranges) are quite expensive in Oman, especially during the high season when prices are blazing. But next to that, we can eat in coffee shops / snacks for a few euros and gasoline are 3 times cheaper than at home. (We did 1 refuel of 4X4 140L for 31 rials or 70 €!). We also saw people hitchhiking even if we do not recommend because of the long distances to travel sometimes ... it can be a long time to reach your destination! In short, the country is accessible!
CURRENCY: Omani Rial (OMR) 1 rial = € 2.30 (in November 2018)
PAYMENT: CB is very common, but it is always better to have some cash on oneself, especially in the villages or the most remote corner. Pay attention to the commissions that you will pay to your bank for each withdrawal, unless you have for example a Revolut card like us (free for 200 € / month).

It's unwise to pay too much but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, all you lose is a little money.That's all! But when you pay too little you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing that it was bought to do. The common law of business practice prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can't be done! If you deal with the lowest bidder, it's wise to add something for the risk you run and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better!
